8 Must Have Birthday Party Images to Capture

One of my favorite things to photograph is a child’s birthday party. They are styled so beautifully with so much attention to detail. Typically I work with parties for one year olds up to 7 year olds. Parties tend to have a theme and all details, including the cake, will be an expression of the theme of the party.

What a great list! Going to make sure I get all of these shots at my kid's party. Read - "8 Must Have Birthday Party Images to Capture"

I love photographing details and spend most of my time on the details and styling. Over the years, I have learned there are 8 things I always try to photograph.

    Main food table

The main food table is typically the center of the design for the theme of the party. I always photograph the entire table. This table was for a fairy party hosted at a Christmas tree farm. The table fit so perfectly between the two giant trees.

    The Cake

The cake is a big deal. I have seen some amazing cakes at the parties I have photographed. I will always get the entire cake, but then zoom in on some details.

    The Food

Oh the food! So many goodies at kid’s parties. In our area, very detailed cookies that match the party theme are a must!

    Tablescapes

I love photographing the tablescapes! It’s always fun to see the place settings and table decorations.

    Decorations/Details

I love walking around and looking at all the details of a party! Parents work so hard to make a party perfect with the details. I try to find and photograph as many of the details as I can.

    Birthday invitation

I always ask or make sure the parents have an extra copy of the invitation so I can photograph it. I have seen some really cute and unique invitations!

    Birthday child

Okay, let’s be honest. It’s really hard to slow a child down to take a picture on their birthday! I try to get them with their main food table, or some aspect of their party.

Giving them something to do helps. In the image with the little girl and table, we had her look at all the goodies on the table. The other we used balloons. That is sure way to get smiles!

    Birthday child with family

This is another image that can be hard to get. We know how busy parents are the day of the party. Before I leave, I will ask the parents if I can take a quick picture of them before I go. Sometimes I get the entire family, sometimes it’s just mom.
