New Baby Photography Ideas?
Lifestyle

Did you know one of our contributors, Kelly, was expecting?? She was blessed with a beautiful baby boy on Monday. Miles was born Monday the 19th weighing 7lbs 3oz and measuring 18 inches. We are beyond excited for her and her sweet family!! Prior to giving birth she wrote this post asking about new baby photography because she needs YOUR help!

Take a minute to read it and leave a comment giving your new baby photography idea!!

After you do that, head over to her Facebook page, Kelly Garvey Photography, and tell her Congratulations!!!

HI!!! It’s Kelly here :)

So…I am having a baby on Monday, March 19th! I don’t know if this post will be live before or after he is born so my past/ present/ future tense may be off, but that’s okay! I shoot newborns so I am super excited about having a new subject BUT also feeling nervous about being responsible for taking my own newborn pictures. Taking your own personal pictures just seems so different…I want to make sure not to miss anything but don’t know how I will be feeling, what his temperment will be, if he’ll be a good eater, how my three year old will act (ha!) etc.

Now this is where all of you AWESOME CIUAN readers come in!

I’d LOVE your help!

I have a short list of “must have” shots to take but I would love your ideas! I know I am missing lots of important shot ideas :) I wasn’t a photographer right when this guy (Garrett) was born so I am SUPER excited to be able to document Miles from day one! (Big brother below!).

Here’s my (not so thorough) list:
-sibling shots (I have a couple ideas pinned)
-use a new wire crate with some Lowe’s beadboard flooring I bought & hang a “Miles” banner behind him
-for outside in the evening light, use my Coke crates to pose him on top (safely as a composite shot of course!)
-each month with his 1-12 month onesies
-lots of curled up naked shots all over the house & lifestyle with his brothers, dogs, dad & maybe even some with me if I can find the energy to pull out the camera on the tripod & shoot the interval timer feature
-lots of macro (I got a new 105mm macro I am dying to try out)!

Is there anything imperative I must capture of my new baby (in your opinion)? Or any creative/ fun ideas you just feel like sharing? Reply below with a link or a picture of your new baby photography ideas!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!! XOXO.

I think the monthly onesies are cute bit I’d also suggest taking his picture with or next to the same object each month. I did my son’s with a stuffed pelican. I love comparing the early months with the pics now because you can really see how much they change!

I like to take pictures of baby parts – like the top of their head(showing the hair swirls), maybe just the pinkie finger, also like to take pictures of the feet.

This is not technically just for newborns but a great idea I have heard about. Take a photo on or around your child’s birthday each year. Each photo is then printed and framed. Every year the updated photo is put into the same frame on top of the previous year and when your child is turns 21 present them with their photos. A nice idea to see how they change over the years!

Congratulations on your new blessing! You have a lot of great shots in mind. I’m sure you are going to have fun taking his pictures. :) there are so many cute newborn poses on pinterest. I like the ones where the baby rests his head in his hands… I’m not really sure what it is called. Like a previous poster mentioned, the monthly pictures next to a stuffed animal are fun to look back at! We did that for my daughter, we used the same bear, and propped her next to it on the rocking chair at her month birthday. She wore a white onsie every time. My pictures were not of professional quality, but it is amazing to look at how much they change and grow each month. Congratulations again! I’m sure you will take some amazing pictures of your son.

Oh Kelly Congratulations xx Enjoy your new little guy. I love images of the day to day stuff, like the washing lines filled with baby clothes, babe’s first bath that they actually enjoy and relax and sleeping swaddled in a crib that seems to look massive but in only 2 short years looks too small.

I did a breastfeding shoot in 2011 and loved the results. I think similar emotions can be achieved if photographing a bottle feed (ill have to go hunting for the bottle feeding image I am thinking of)

Here is a link to a breastfeeding shoot I did:

Congratulations!!! I myself have two boys and I wasn’t a photographer with either of them at birth, so I know I missed out on a ton of shots I would have LOVED to have. Something I saw on another photogs blog was to set up the camera and take photos of YOU in them, maybe reading a story at night to big brother while feeding/holding/rocking little brother, but use the self-timer or remote to snap away those moments. I wish I could have had that!!!!! And photograph him in all ways, any time of day, maybe the clock during an early AM feeding. Drawers of clothing/hanging up, body parts, row of tiny diapers, dad with the boys, there are so many moments!!! Enjoy them :) : )

Don’t forget to take nursery pics! And bath time!

PICS of YOU! As one who is horrible about getting in front of the camera be sure to include photos of you and the lil man. My kids love looking at our less than glamorous hospital shots, where sibs are piled on the bed w/me and I’m holding the latest addition.

Congrats! I love the shots with I think white xmas lites strung up in the background, using an open aperature on baby and lights show up as bokeh. Baby laying on a blanket or something in foreground. Looking forward to seeing what you shoot!

Feet and hand pictures are my favorite. Their little hands trying to grab at much larger objects. Agree with pictures of you. My newborn is almost a year now and there are very few pictures of me with baby because I’m always the one behind the camera. I really regret not having more.
