Halloween – Lessons Learned
Lifestyle

Hope everyone had a Happy Halloween!! It is always fun to see holidays through your children’s eyes. I thought I would share some things I learned about photographing and surviving Halloween :O)

1. Halloween was a lot more fun when I was a kid. I had a great time with the girls but man, wasn’t it more fun when all you did was tell your mom what you wanted, she made it, and then your dad took you trick or treating. Your only concern was how much candy you were going to get or making sure people knew you were a “purple fairy princess” and not a witch (turns out I shouldn’t have gotten her a witch costume :O)

2. Don’t forget to photograph the details. Some of the best ways to capture a holiday is to remember the little things. All the candy, the pumpkin seeds, or just a little part of the costume that you loved.

3. Keep an eye on your little ones. When you are doing things out of your daily schedule, things are left out that aren’t normally out. I guess this is why you shouldn’t leave a box of toothpicks sitting on the kitchen table.

4. Remember to capture the real moments. Life isn’t full of happy smiles all the time. Realisticly, trying to photograph 7 children is near impossible! Don’t forget to document the craziness that comes with photographing children :O) Sometimes a photo of 7 turns into a photo of 4. ha ha

5. We take photos to remember the moment, not to have the most technically correct photo. Yes, these were shot on “auto”. I think this is the first time I have put it on auto since I bought it. In fact, I’m pretty sure my camera was a little confused as to what to do :O) I almost didn’t bring my camera because I knew it would be really hard to capture on manual mode, but this was Emma’s first year to try and “trick or treat” so I wanted to capture it. I sucked it up and put it on auto mode. Yes, these aren’t the best techinical pictures but at least I have this memory of Emma going up to see the dog. She refused to go to any other houses :O)

YAY for AUTO!!!! Lately, I have been beating myself up for not shooting on manual ALL THE TIME!! Then I realized I am not always taking pictures to impress myself or anyone else. I just want to have a picture of Bennett sticking his hand inside the pumpkin and we don’t have good light, so auto will be great.

Thanks for being honest. The pictures are great!!!!!!!!!

I have to admit that I took my kids picture on auto too and the picture didn’t look as great as I wanted it to. I was at a moment where it was raining, the kids were really wanting to go trick or treating and they were not in the mood for mom to stand around trying to set her camera. I guess that I need to worry about the memory like you said and not worry about how perfect my picture is going to turn out. Thanks for the great lesson!
