I always wanted to do one of these “Day in the Life of” photo projects. I figured since today is my birthday that yesterday would be the perfect day to record our life. It will be fun to look back and see what a normal day when I was 30 looked like.
I will be the first to admit that while these photos may not be photography genius, I do love them and it got me thinking about different photography situations. You have to work with different lighting situations, compositions, and there are a lot of not “ideal” factors.
This is a great exercise to do if you are in a rut and need to pick up your camera again.
How it works:
-Pick a day
-Take your camera EVERYWHERE
-You can photograph each hour or each activity
-Some people set an alarm to go off each hour
-Start shooting
Here we go:
4:09 am – Claire decides she is starving. Turns out it’s really hard to get a shot in the dark when you are exhausted. ha
8:11 am – This lovely one greets me good morning.
9:43 am – Time to get dressed and ready to go meet our friends.
10:46 am – Playing with friends at an indoor play area.
11:26 am – This play area is fantastic because the kids are happy and I get to chat with my friends.
1:57 pm – Time for lunch. We found an burger place that was trying to be like an American joint. We listened to oldies and had burgers and fries. It was like a small slice of home.
3:44 pm – Claire’s 1 month picture time.
4:50 pm – Edit Claire’s pictures.
6:21 pm – We are blessed with a fantastic squadron who have people signed up to bring us dinner to help out after Claire was born. Thank you Katey for the delicious dinner!!
7:13 pm – After dinner walk with Buzz, 3 kids, and two dogs.
8:56 pm – Kids are in bed and it’s time to work on the blog. I’m exhausted!
That’s me in the last picture! Woo Hoo!!!
Seriously, what a great idea! I’ll have to give it a try!
You’re famous!
I love this picture of us! I am so excited I got to be apart of your ‘Day in the Life’ bc it WAS such a fun day for me. Especially eating ‘American burgers’ listening to American oldies in Japan. hehe
I declare – we have 4 weeks, must always be gorgeous & take many more pictures of us!
Sounds like a deal!!
Love your blog! This post was especially cool! I’m a SAHM and Coast Guard wife and I was wondering if you’ve done any interesting projects to document your current duty station or others in the past. Thanks for sharing all the great info, and articles! :)
Mmm…I haven’t done one just about our duty station. That would have been a great idea though! Our first full year here though I did do Project 365 where I took a photo a day. I put them all in a book and have great pictures that portray our time here in Japan. I will have to do some brainstorming though and see if I can come up with something :O)
This seems like a fun idea – I wonder if my days are interesting enough to do this though…or if this would make a day more interesting.
Your days are TOTALLY interesting enough!

I’ve tried this before without much luck but with my birthday coming up in a couple of weeks you’ve inspired me to try again ;-) Thank you for your wonderful blog – you’re the reason I discovered Clickin’ Moms and have discovered how to actually use my camera – lol. Happy Birthday!

Hey AnnMarie!
Glad you like it! It’s a fun thing to do and a great creative exercise to document your day!! Have fun with it!
Cool idea!
I love this! I will have to do one soon! What were you using to set up your 1 month photo area? I couldn’t tell if it was just a blanket. And what lense are you using during you day in the life shoot? 50mm f/1.4?
Hey Erin,
Yes, it’s a blanket from IKEA. I believe I used the 50mm 1.4 :)
