    Erica,

I love reflection photos and you did a great job with this one. The reflection is really sharp and overall the image tells a greeat story. I think this would also have worked well with the subjects walking toward the camera. I guess my tip would to be to have the subject in a different direction. Really I love it as it is. I love the warmth of color in the reflection. Great job.

I love the reflection in the water!

I wish it was centered differently. I feel like the subjects get overpowered by the concrete, however I do see how you had to include a lot of it to capture the walk and the reflection. Perhaps choosing one would make it clearer what the focus was :)

The colors and tones are really great in this picture.

I love this photo! Nothing beats a man’s best friend, I like how the trees and pathway give the photo great depth. I love the fall colors and refection. I would have tried to move back just a bit to get the man and his dog a little lower in the frame. Great photo. Was it by chance a composite?

      Hi Laura,

Thank you! When I crouched down lower (a shot I also took), it took them both out of the reflection. I liked this one better : ) It is not a composite – just one shot!

I love the soft evening tones in this shot. I would play around with the cropping. I would have been tempted to crop it down to make the reflection the focal point of the shot, perhaps taking off part of the owner and dog. I like to do things unconventionally sometimes though :) I love the concept your went for and the angle is nice.

      Hi Molly,

Thank you for your feedback! I had definitely considered cropping it down a bit – I’ll have to play around with it some more!

    Erica,
The reflection is great. However I think that there is to much sky in the bottom and not enough at the top. Remember the thirds rule. Honestly it looks a little too clear in the reflection to seem real. Also the way that they are walking seems weird I feel like he is almost riding the dog or has dog legs. The color is my favorite part.

      Hi Kristy,

Thank you for the feedback – I hadn’t noticed the riding the dog bit. Can you possibly offer a little more perspective on why the reflection doesn’t look real? It is – this isn’t a composite or anything. I just focused on the reflection, not on the actual subjects (you can see that they’re a little blurry due to my aperture of 1.8). Any suggestions are welcome!

Although I love the perspective in this image and the colors, at a quick first glance the gentlemen looked like he was riding the dog. Maybe just to show more of his legs? Otherwise the reflection is amazing that you captured!

I love this photo! The colors are so nice and work well together. I think I might have cropped it down just a bit so the man is lower in the photo, but I understand that the beautiful reflections of the sky are in that water puddle also. You should be very proud of such a lovely reflection shot.

  • September 24, 2012 at 1:51 PM

That is a great reflection picture! The colors are so intense within the reflection. I personally would have brightened it up just a touch and then cropped the bottom up a bit so that there wasn’t so much sky. What a wonderful shot to get! Good job.

  • September 24, 2012 at 1:51 PM

I love the way you captured the reflection! Creative framing. :) One thing I might have done differently is to step back a little and crouch down even more, and get a wider angle on the sky. From what I can tell the colors are gorgeous, and with that shot I feel like we’re missing a little of the color. But you really made me want to go for a walk there!

  • September 24, 2012 at 2:32 PM

What a great clear shot! Very sharp and love the color palette. I think I would have cropped it a little differently, maybe tilting the frame some or cropping to make the reflection the focus. Or when shooting the shot I would have focused more on the reflection and set my aperature to fade the background more so the concrete is not as overpowering. Love the concept though! I am always very fond of the untraditional!

      Hi Heather,

I really appreciate your suggestion – I see now that the sidewalk is a bit overpowering. My aperture was wide open at 1.8 and I set my focus on the reflection in the water. Typically this would provide a little more blur to the background – I may have to try it another way – though the sky’s colors that night after the rain are likely one time only!

  • September 24, 2012 at 2:38 PM

I like the color in this photo and the perspective is great too. I think that the reflection is definitely too sharp, and I would have liked to see a little less of the road and more of the sky (crop it so that the man/dog are more in the center of the image vertically). I also would have liked to see a little more space between the man and dog so that they don’t appear as one figure. Nice concept though, I’m a huge fan of shots from behind and I like the story this one tells. :)

      Hi Betsy,

Thanks for the suggestions – I’m definitely going to play around with the crop on this photo. Can you tell me a little more about what you mean by the reflection being too sharp? Does it not look real, as a PP alluded to? Would you prefer it to be out of focus?

      Thanks for helping me improve!

        Hi again Erica,
Yes, that’s exactly what I mean…did you sharpen the reflection or enhance it at all? It almost looks like a mirror rather than water. I think if it was softened a little or blurred it would have a more realistic feel to it. I really like the colors and perspective though!
        :) Betsy

Thanks for clarifying, Betsy. I did do an unsharp mask in Photoshop, but only what I usually do for the web…maybe it was too much. I appreciate your feedback!

This is a cool picture. I love that you can clearly see the man and the dog in the reflection of the water. I might have centered the two images (the man/dog & the reflection of the man/dog) between the top and bottom of the picture. Cool picture though!

  • September 24, 2012 at 4:15 PM

I love the scenery, the tones and the reflection. I would crop it a little closer (so the reflection is at the very bottom of the photo, less street). Really neat photo.

  • September 24, 2012 at 5:33 PM

The reflection in the water is very neat – I also love the colors – I can FEEL the sunset. This shot from an even lower angle, like laying on your belly (getting soaking well in the puddles – haha) would be a neat perspective, or getting more of a reflection and seeing the rest of the body in the reflection.

I am crazy in love with reflections so of course I absolutely love this! would only wish to see a little more of the dog in the reflection. Also Love the colors!!! the sun setting or rising whatever it’s beautiful!

Wow what an amazing shot. I am impressed that you were able to catch this moment so perfectly in the reflection of the puddle as the man and the dog are walking. The tone of this picture captures the essence of sunset. Love it. I really enjoy seeing the long sidewalk as it fades in the distance. I am amazed at how tack sharp the image is from the reflection to the actual subject. Nice job. It’s actually hard for me to come up with a suggestion b/c it is such a great shot. I might suggest playing around with cropping a bit to see how that may change/improve the photo even more. Great shot.

Lovely shot. I adore the colors, and the way the pathway is a leading line. The only thing I would do is to lighten the trees beside the man and dog. They seem a bit dark. I’m in love with the reflection! It’s the cherry on top. Nice job.

I LOVE the colors in this photo! However, I think that the reflection is a bit too sharp. Maybe try softening it in post-editing? Another thing that I did notice was that it kind of looks as if the man is riding the dog….actually, when I first looked at it, I thought it was a picture of a man riding a pony or horse(it took me quite a while to figure it out)…maybe try a different angle next time? But, when I figured it out I was totally fell in love with your photo! I really love all the leading lines in this photo…they really draw you in to the picture. The sunset is gorgeous, I love how you can just see the bright orange behind the trees. Spectacular job!

Killer reflection!! :) the focus is super sharp, and I am in love wih all the warm colors from the sunset. Really great capture. My idea for improvement, and this is probably just personal preference, is to crop out the top of the image leaving just the dogs paws in. I think that would let the reflection shine bright using the rule of thirds and intensify the wow factor. So inspiring :). I haven’t played with reflections before and I just love what you did.

I love so much about this photo – the reflection, the colors, the composition, the leading lines of the sidewalk!. My initial response was a sigh of relaxation! I’m surprised the f-stop was 1.8 – the picture looks fairly clear for such a low apperature. I would like the foreground (the trees at the end of the sidewalk) to be more out of focus, but you are already at your f-stop limits… also, the lighting makes it look like the subjects were cut and paste onto the background – I wish that were softer, could that be fixed post-production? I’m being really picky here to find something to critique you on, though, I really love the picture – great shot!

Oooo I love the color of the sky and how you can see it in the reflection!! The dog is so tall, I would like to see a better comparison or maybe a different angle to show the dog’d height relative to the person’s height. The reflection is so perfect! Sort of like seeing the sky in ground and not knowing where it ends. I love that :)

  • September 26, 2012 at 3:04 PM

WOW! This shot is just gorgeous!! I don’t think I would change anything :) But since this is a critique I would maybe try the shot with them walking towards you so you could capture their faces in the reflection or maybe see how this one looks in BW (I’m guessing the color photo is the winner in this case :) ). Great job!!!

Wow what a great photo! Love the color, love the reflection love the look down the road. The only thing I would do differently would be to take it with them back a bit further and get the whole reflection … if only that puddle was bigger..:) Great shot!

What a FUN photo! I love the leading lines of the road and trees–it gives the impression that these best friends have the entire world in front of them.

I don’t think there would have been any way to capture more of the man’s legs–this was probably a once-and-done sort of shot. I have no problems telling the man and dog are walking side by side.

At first glance, I also questioned if that was a true reflection or if it was composed–I think it looks too perfect, too clear. I think if the reflection was muted in color, I would not have questioned the reflection’s realness. (I’m only stating this because you had questioned up above asking what about the reflection looked fake.)

But, truthfully, I would proudly display this photo and not change a thing! Your settings were right and your timing perfect to capture such a perfectly clear reflection. I hope you are proud!
