I remember the moment I got my first DSLR camera. It was the day after my second daughter was born because my husband had accidentally broken our camera moments before she was born (don’t worry, we used my mom’s camera).
Shortly after I got the camera I started to learn about manual mode and all there was to photography. It was way more than just having a nice DSLR.
However, I still laugh because after I got the camera and started figuring things out my husband said, “Great! Now we don’t have to pay someone else to take our photos. You can do it.”
And I tried. Believe me.
I even wrote a post about how to take your own family photos.
But it’s hard and let’s be honest…not a lot of fun to play photographer, mom, model, and all that it requires to run a photoshoot that you are in.
I truly believe that even though you may be a photographer that it is important to hire a photographer to take your family photos.
I’m not saying you have to do this every year, or that you can never take your own photos.
But treat yourself to the gift of professional photos where you can enjoy the session instead of stress about it every couple of years.

No.01You only have to think about one thing
When you hire someone to take your own family photos you are only thinking about one thing…how does my hair look? Just kidding…sort of.
However, when you do it yourself you are rounding up your kids, looking for light, figuring out the settings, setting up the tripod, running into the picture and running back to check the frame. Plus, posing and hoping and praying that your kids are actually looking at the camera and not lifting up dressing or watching a bird fly overhead.
It can be quite stressful which then everyone else picks up on and it can be a challenge to create relaxed comfortable images that capture who your family truly is together.

No.02Photos of you and your spouse
How often do you and your spouse have professional photos taken?
Was the last time your wedding day? Be honest…it’s okay. I was guilty of this too.
However, when you have a professional do your family photos you can express ahead of time that you would like images of the two of you together. They can help keep an eye on your kiddos to make sure they don’t run off a cliff chasing a bunny instead of you giving your kids the side eye while you run back and forth to the camera.

No.03Someone will tell you if you look awkward
Being in front of the camera instead of behind it is difficult.
I know how to get my kids and husband to pose in front of the camera but when I run in front of it I act like this is the first time I have hands. What do I do with these things? Tell me I’m not the only one.
Having a photographer tell me how to lean my head in so the light hits my eyes and to draw closer to my kids and husband helps to decrease my stress level which helps us all to have a good time.

No.04The children listen better to someone else
I’m pretty sure my children no longer hear me when I’m giving directions. However, when this fun person shows up and wants to play games and be silly all of a sudden my children are much more cooperative.
This helps to get them in front of the camera instead of off catching grasshoppers.

No.05It helps you appreciate your clients
Have you ever had to get three daughters & yourself ready and then drive 3 hours in the car to have your family photos taken? Well, it’s a bit chaotic.
When you pull up late and disheveled you have a new appreciate for the parents who come to your sessions who may need a few minutes to collect themselves.

No.06You are more likely to print your images
You paid for these. You are more likely to finally get these off your computer and print these. Hang them proudly on your walls.

No.07You don't have to edit the images
Instead of stressing during the session and then going home to find that only two turned out and then you have to edit them.
You have hired someone to take care of that. When the session is over you go out for ice cream or dinner or whatever it is that you promised your kids if they were good.
You don’t need to cull or edit the images. Someone is going to take care of that for you and send them to you when they are all ready.
thank you Great tips
