A day in the life of is a fantastic photography project that everyone should tackle at least once a year. It is a great way to look back on this season of your life through images. There are many ways to do it, a general day in the life of or you can focus on a certain person in your family or aspect of your life.
Today I’m excited to share with you all a glimpse at how this Work at Home Momma spends her days. So here we go!
6:00am Schools back in session so I’ve got the alarm set and usually make it downstairs about twenty minutes later to pack lunches and squeeze in breakfast for myself
7:00am If I’m lucky, the kids will sleep until now and I will wake up the older two and get my oldest ready for school
7:50am Walk the biggest of my three out the door to catch the bus
8:00am Drop my boys off at the sitters so I can get a few uninterrupted hours of work in. My desk has maintained the status of ‘tidy mess’ for a while now and I’ll take that over the disaster it had been the month before! I edit for a living so my work hours are spent at my desk editing away, emailing clients, and file sharing :)
9:30am The sitter lives a couple houses down and I go ahead and pickup the boys for their naps, so I pick up our littlest guy for his morning nap, then back to work!
10:00am Laundry needs to be switched so my work break is spent folding laundry
11:30 Take the littlest back over for another 30 minutes of work time (I squeeze in as much as I can!)
12:00pm Pickup the boys and bring them home for lunch
1:00pm Time for naps! I put my middle son down for his nap then it’s time for the littlest guys second nap. Had to leave him for a minute to deal with the older boy hollering just to tell me that Harvey (the baby) had stopped crying. Thanks buddy, I gotcha…
1:30pm I’ve got 1.5-2 hours to get more work done! I also scarf down a bowl of cereal to get some sort of lunch in me
3:30pm Wake the boys and head down to the bus stop!
3:45pm The gangs all here! My middle child is definitely happy to see sissy :)
4:00pm I sit the kids in from of the TV (yes I’m that bad mom) for 30 minutes for my daughter to unwind from school AND more importantly, so I can clean up the downstairs from the chaos of our day
5:00-7:00 Family time!!! Dinner, a little play time and baths all happen between these two hours
7:45pm If all goes well then all the Youngn’s are safely tucked into bed
8:00-10:00 On the crazy weeks I will squeeze in two more hours of work, if it’s a normal week then these two hours are spent cuddling the hubby :)
What I’ve learned the most in these four years as a Work at Home Mom is this:
-
No.01There is never enough time.
My time is not my own… Boy did I think the total opposite of that!
-
No.02The house is going to be a disaster.
I could try to do it all, but I just can’t. I think that’s the biggest misconception, that by working at home we get more time to take care of the house, well that’s a lie, a big fat lie. OUTSOURCE!
-
No.03Creating work hours is essential.
It can be too easy to squeeze in just a little more work when you technically never leave the office at the end of the day. Setting work hours has given me my sanity back and also freed me of unrealistic expectations.
-
No.04It's pretty awesome to work in sweatpants.
Do I need to say more???
-
No.05It's totally worth it.
Ultimately, for me, the positives outweigh the negatives and I wouldn’t have it any other way… Because if I worked outside the home, I wouldn’t be able to sneak in nap time cuddles, or an afternoon break spent at the park with the kids. It’s not entirely all I thought it was going to be but I still wouldn’t trade it for anything. With all the chaos I still get what I wanted most out of it, the flexibility to be there when my family needs me. But there is definitely MORE chaos than I realized going into this four years ago…
Well I hope you all have enjoyed peeking into my crazy day! Do you work at home? What are some of the ways you’ve made it work for YOU?!?
Love this article and the way you inspire people to get out there and take pictures. Any advice on how to get the great pictures you inspired us to take to look great on the web or on facebook? My pictures look just how I want them on photoshop and when I print but not so great when you look at them from an iphone or blog they come across kind of grainy. Thanks for any help you can offer!
Wow loved this post. I know being a stay at home mom is definitely not an easy task. But squeezing in between and doing your “working” stuff is my favorite thing as a writer mom:) I like staying busy that way….
Loved the way you have captured your day!!
