You guys blew my socks off with the last critique! Your eye for the small details was awesome!! I have decided to post a newer photo of mine. Also, I will be opening up the “Critique Me” posts to your photos. Read about how to Submit Your Photo for Critique Me.
Read all about How to Critique A Photo. After you have read it, please come back here and critique this photo.
I hate to bee a stickler but if you critique doesn’t have at least one thing you would change or improve it will be deleted. A great critique always includes something that can be improved along with a couple of positive things. Think of it like a critique sandwhich – start with a nice thing, put in a few things to improve, and end with a specific nice thing again. No photo is perfect!! Plus, I know I always feel terrible when someone asks for a critique on their photo and the 10 comments in front of mine are just full of “Love it” and “Beautiful”. Those are not critiques they are comments. Then I feel like the bad guy writing a critique when no one else did. So that is my rule- no improvement tip = deleted comment.
Please critique the following photo! Check back to read other’s critiques (after you have left your own) which is another GREAT way to train your eye. I suggest writing your critique before reading everyone else’s. Who cares if you don’t agree with everyone else. You have an opinion and you are entitled to it. I will add my own critique after you guys critique it. Can’t wait to see what you think!

With all the internet issues I haven’t had a chance to tell you guys that I was featured/interviewed by Branson @ My Reflection of Something in her Photographer’s With Style series. Check it out!!
I just love the bright color in your photos! And her eyes are so sharp. I would have closed down the aperture a bit more so her hands, ears, and shoulder would be in focus. Since your ISO is so low, you’d have lots of room for a larger aperture.
Totally not part of the critique, but that dress is adorable!
Hi there! Indeed the dress is super cute! I think the eye level angle is great, but I maybe would have rotated around a little more so that the green bars framed her a little better on both sides instead of just the right.
Great focus and catchlights in her eyes! I love the composition with the green bar, maybe if you could have just moved out/over slightly so as not to cut off the very edge of her ear with the bar and maybe open up the aperture a bit so her hands are also in focus. I love how the green bar in the background frames her also! Great exposure and colors!!!!
Thanks for the kind comment you left on my blog. This is my first attempt at critiquing a photo besides own. I found reading the comments on the last critique post you did to be very helpful. I read the comments but did not comment myself.
I love the bright colors. There appears to be a shadow on the face but I looking at this on my iPhone so it could be a dirty screen :). For composition I would have either pulled it in a bit more and filled the frame with more of her face or stepped back a bit and got her whole body in the shot. I like the depth of field and the catch lights in the eyes.
That is a fantastic critique for your first time!!! Well done!
Thanks for the encouragement.
Hmmm. I’d love to hear your own critiques on the photo after we critique it….
I love the catchlights in her eyes and how you just captured a moment of her playing. I think the one thing I would change is the composition…maybe zoom in on her face a llittle more, or rotate just slightly so her left ear isn’t behind the bar a little. She’s such a doll it is hard to critique a photo of her! :)
Gorgeous photo! I love the playful moment you have captured. I love the composition and that you got down on her level. Although the photo is beautiful and bright it’s too much for me and I would love to see it in B&W. The pole is not completely straight. (How do you straighten vertical things BTW?). I love her expression and the joy in her eyes.
Personally, I love this shot because it shows Emma’s fun personality. I like the colors but had never thought to do it in B & W like Sarah suggested. Thanks! I like how the pole acts as a useful prop for her to play peek-a-boo around. She has wonderful catchlights and I think her skin tones look good. However, this photo is a little too tight. I should have backed up to give her more room in the photo. Her right arm is scrapping the edge of the side. I would clone our the extra equipment in the background which does not add to the photo. Especially the green bars and the stair coming in one the left side in the middle. I would also clone out the drawl and fix the redness of her chin. As far as emotion goes, you can’t beat that expression. Thank you everyone for your spectacular critiques!! You pointed out things I hadn’t even noticed like her ear being cut off by the bar!! You guys rock!! Don’t forget to submit your own photo if you are ready!
I love her expression! And I love the colors (the green and the bright dress) I might have tried to change my angle or get her to move a bit so her ear wasn’t cut off at the end. I think I would have either gotten closer ( I love facial shots) or backed up more for a full body shot. I love how you got down on her level for the shot!
(my first critique! :) )
Whoo hoo!! Great first critique!!! Hope you join us each week!! I look forward to hearing more from you!
I love her expression in this shot. I think as far as composition goes, I would have brought it closer (to eliminate the top of the pole as it distracts) and widened the aperture to include the focus on the hands, cloned the red and then played with black and white. This is a wonderful shot of pure joy :) The color is amazing!
This is my first critique too ..
I have to say this one is a little hard to critique. The colors, composition, light in her eyes, and the angle are all great. I think the only thing I would have done differently would be is to crop out the table edge just to the right of her shoulder. This may also create an even better frame for her face than you already were able to create. Other than that this was a pretty fantastic photo of a cute little button!
hmm i’m staying away from this one =0) just kidding…. she is a doll i love the colors, her smile! the focus is a little off but her smile brings it back =0) i wold love to see this one in Black and white! great capture of her in “real life”
I don’t feel like I’m qualified to judge someone else’s pic, but here goes.
I LOVE the composition in this picture, the pole is a great centering piece, and the color really makes it “pop”. The only thing I found distracting were the green table legs that seemed to be growing out of her body. Maybe photoshop those out? I think the vertical pole in the back makes sense and helps balance the picture. Her smile is so relaxed and natural, I know this will be priceless to her parents!
The bold colors in this photo really catch the eye! I think I would have come in closer to crop out the bracket at the top of the pole and draw the attention to her cute little face and bright eyes. She is such a cutie! Thanks so much for sharing!
You did an awesome job with the catch lights in her eyes! I love that you were able to capture the wet smile! I may have tried to move around such that there was a bit more space between her arm and the right edge of the photo. The light from the back is a nice effect through her hair. You definately captured this little girls personality!
Love this one. Color even skin color is perfect. and sharp focus softness. You did a great job!!
My first critique so hope i do this right! i absolutely love the bright colors all over this photo from the playground to that dress! I just wish that shadow from the pole did not fall on her face so both eyes were equally bright and her whole beautiful face was lit up like that big smile! :) great photo!! Adorable little angel!!
This picture is adorable! It’s very fun, vibrant, and has a lot of personality. I like it!
Love the bright colors in her dress! And how the green poles in the back ground pop a little against the neutral tan. Her right hand looks like it’s in an awkward position to me and maybe use rule of thirds.
