Thanks to Amanda at Through His Grace Photography for submitting the following image.
Settings: ISO 1600, f/5.6, SS 1/125
What a gorgeous kitty! I love his eyes. So pretty! The image is a little over exposed. I would bump the ISO down. In the sun like that I would think ISO 400 or so would be plenty. Also I think it should be straightened just a hair. I love the tones of this image-the wall color looks great with the cat’s eyes. I also really love the eye contact. The image gives the feeling of a warm, lazy afternoon.
I agree totally with Eileen. Love the composition, touch overexposed, but given the likely amount of time probably given (by the cat) to choose the ISO, i think its absolutely adorable
Thanks Tamara!
Thank you!
I love this pic, the colours and the way kitty is looking right at the camera. The only thing I would say, as above, is that its a touch on the bright side.
Thanks!
Absolutely love the background color and eye contact on Kitty’s behalf :) I would also recommend bumping the ISO down a notch or 2 to avoid over-exposure. Otherwise, love this! As a self-confessed crazy cat lady, I know how difficult it can be to get your cats to cooperate and look at the camera! ;-P
Thanks Rachel, yes I did just have to grab the camera, seeing her lounging like that I instantly thought “OOOOHHH CAMERA!” haha!
I think it’s awesome how the wall almost seems to go with the cats eyes. I think it’s a bit bright..the sunlight almost washes out the fur towards the back, and you lose the lovely patterning of his fur. That having been said, the brightness really brings out those gorgeous eyes! It’s lovely. :)
Thanks Amanda!
I would also try keep it to ISO400 for an indoor shot as there seems to be a beautiful light source nearby. The rule of thirds is used and you are at the subject’s level with great eye contact. The background adds a nice contrast. Try reshooting 1/2-1 stop underexposed to get more data. Then adjust shadows and highlights in Camera Raw to your liking. When an image is overexposed the data is lost. Watch a tutorial on histograms to understand highlights and how to adjust for it.
Thank you Heidi!
I was wondering why my wall looked fuzzy.
:-)
I absolutely love the use of light in this image and how it spotlights your subject!
At first glance, it seems that your sweet cat is a bit overexposed… Which is tricky in these lighting situations. I think I’d experiment more with the settings – a lower ISO and higher aperture. Since your kitty is still, a lower SS won’t be bad, but make sure its not so low you get camera shake. This might help find a better exposure to bring out the details of the cat’s coat.
The perspective you took on this is wonderful. A “cat’s view”, and I love how s/he is looking directly into your lens. Great job!!
Thanks for the great tips Erin!
As stated from others, the subject matter is awesome (from one cat lady to another!) and I love the background color with the kitty’s eyes! I too think that bringing out more of the striping on the cat and setting the ISO a little lower and opening up a bit would have been that cat’s meow!!
You do have a great knack for subject matter!!
Thanks Tina!
The composition in the photo is perfection. It’s a bit overexposed, though. I don’t think ISO really needed to be so high. Your capturing of Kitty’s eye contact is so good and the colour of the wall background really makes the eyes pop!
What a cute cat! Like a lot if the comments before said love the wall color and the cat’s eyes. The light is a little too bright. Sometimes I adjust the light in editing and it saves an overexposed picture. With my canon sometimes the picture looks good on the camera but comes out too light. I try to remember that and make sure things look a little darker on the camera. Something else I thought might have been nice is to zoom out and see the cat’s legs. Hopefully you get more opportunities to take shots of this cat in front of this wall. Love that wall color!
Thank you Meagan, I’m shooting with a Canon and that does happen to me. Appreciate the advice.
I love the way the light is falling over the cat creating that lazy summer afternoon effect. I feel like the photo is slightly overexposed. I tend to overexpose my photos a lot and like that look, but here I think it would be better to have it a little darker so you can focus on the cat more. I love the wall behind the cat providing good contrast and bringing out the cat’s eyes. Great photo! :)
Thanks Hannah!
P.S. I also see that some people are saying to zoom out a little more to see the cat’s legs. I have to agree that that could definitely improve your photo :)
Thanks Hannah, I’m going to try and get a full body shot of her, she was hiding behind a table so that’s the reason for the cropped body. :-)
Love the colors! beautiful cat! Great job capturing the cats gaze into the lens and level. If it were me I would turn down the ISO to around 200 and set a narrower DOF to around 2.8 and faster shutter at around 1/250 or 1/300 and adjust. I would want a blurrier background, and closer shot of just the kitty’s head and whiskers and maybe all if its front legs bringing more if the focal point onto the face. Landscape mode was the way to go!
Wonderful tips thanks so much Connie!
Thank you so much for all the wonderful advice ladies! I’m still learning all the little details of ISO, aperture, etc working together so your advice helps tremendously!
This shot of my furry daughter Autumn shows her personality so well, I had to capture it by laying on the floor and shooting through the legs of a table and chair. I didn’t think about cutting her legs out of the picture, but I see now how it would have made it a better picture. Thankfully being a cat she lays around a lot so I’m going to work on getting some more pics of her, full bodied and with the ISO turned down to make it a smooth shot.
I really appreciate all the advice! Thanks for taking the time to comment. :-)
I love her grey coat in contrast to the blue wall. Plus, I love how her eyes match! You did absolutely great on the colors here! I agree that with that sun your ISO could have been a bit higher. But I do love how she is laying in the sun, and how it so perfectly captures the cat’s personality.
BTW-I enjoyed looking at and reading your blog :) LOVE the name of your business.
Thank you so much Chelsea! I have to give credit where it’s due, He is the only reason I was able to buy my camera and do what I love. :-) I also volunteer weekly at the humane society taking photos of animals for their webpage.
What a gorgeous kitty!!! I LOVE the composition of this photo and the great eye contact. My only issue with it is the blown highlights. I know it is tough to get around that because knowing kitties, I am sure he/she found a patch of sun on the floor and was warming up in it. I would play with levels/curves/highlights to see if you could do anything to make it not so noticeable. i guess if it is blown, there is not a ton you can do but who knows unless you try right? But I also love how those blown highlights are reflecting back into his/her eyes. Also, minor, but with your logo, I’d probably put that on the opposite side of where you put it in the picture. i love the negative space in this composition and also the lines. I might have to try with one of my kitties some day :-)
Thanks so much for the great advice!
I love the turquoise wall! I do think the picture is a little over exposed and think if the ISO was bumped down a little you would have seen the vibrant color of her coat. But its a wonderful example of rule of thirds and leading lines with the base board leading to the cat.
Thank you Candice!
Love that the subject is a cat! I too would drop the ISO down a few notches, because of the light. The cats eye contact is amazing, color of the wall compliments him beautifully.
Thanks!
I love the composition! I agree that the exposure is a bit high (bring it down a couple of f/stops, perhaps?), and that the logo would look more visually appealing in the left bottom corner. Otherwise though, I love the tone! (Oh, and maybe it’s just because of the smaller file size, but I think the cat can be a bit more sharp. That’s subjective though, haha.)
Thanks Diana :-)
This is very cute picture! I really like the composition and that the cat is making eye contact. The cats fur appears to be over exposed. I like how you were down on the cats level.
Thank you :-) Had to get on the floor for this one.
Love the kitty cat & that wall color, the picture is a little bright but other than that a very cool and vibrant photo:)
Thanks!
The fact that the eyes and the walls match, was perfect. I would have maybe continued with the rule of thirds, but have the eyes in the opposite corner so you could have the whole body in the picture. But overall, this is just one of those shots that you love for the spontaneity. Good job!
Thanks! :-)
Such a pretty kitty and I love that you caught him looking right at the camera! I would say maybe sharpening his eyes a bit more just to give them a bit more pop! But overall I love this natural lazy cat pose!
Thank you!
This photo has amazing color. Turquoise is one of my favorite background colors to shoot subjects in front of. I agree with the photo being a little over exposed. But I do love the vibrancy/brightness of the background. My suggestion would be if you were shooting next to a window with blinds or curtains…. maybe slightly close the blinds so less light is coming through. Ideally, so the harsh lighting doesn’t fall directly on the kitty. This will soften his fur and show the nice details of his face. :-) Great job, Amanda!
Thanks!
Oh my goodness! What a cute cat! I love how sharp the eyes are, and the fact that you have some catch lights in the eyes– the two most important things in a {portrait} picture if you ask me! If I had to offer a suggestion, I’d suggest focusing on the eyes, but metering off of the brightest part of the photo (looks like the kitty’s back, where the sun is hitting) that way you don’t lose any detail in the fur or the brighter areas. Last, I love how you got down on the cat’s level, instead of shooting from above, it’s almost as if we can look into his carefree soul!
Thank you! The eyes are my favorite part of this picture. :-)
Adorable kitty being on his level makes you want to reach out and stoke him. Great perspective. I agree with some previous comments that it is a bit overexposed, aside from adjusting your ISO you could also try dialing down the shutter speed to let less light in. Nice job with the f stop slightly blurring the background made the cat pop more.
Thanks!
This is a very captivating photo. You did a great job with composition, rule of thirds and negative space. Creatively, I think the overexposure of the cats fur and carpet work because it draws the viewers eye to the cat. Decreasing the exposure would completely change the mood of the photo. The higher ISO also creates some grain that is visually appealing on the turquoise wall. I like the perspective with the camera on the same plane as the cat. I also love the close crop I don’t think that the photo would have the same cozy feeling if the legs were in the shot. Rules were made to be broken and I think that the limb chop and the slight overexposure work creatively. I have to put an improvement and I would say make your watermark more inconspicuous like a right lower corner signature.
I love this! It really captures the viewer. I think it’s a tad overexposed… if it were a little less the cat’s eyes would pop against that background. His/her eyes are beautiful, I would love to see those stand out! His/her placement is good too, this is a great representation of “a cat’s life”!
I think that the composition is great and the colors are beautiful! My only thought is that maybe the lower part of the pic is a bit over-exposed. Lower the ISO or just adjust when editing. Great picture!
