It’s a nice concept – but everything is out of focus.

I love the way the subjects are framed by the ladder. Everything seems really blurry to me. It seems your SS was high enough to stop motion so I’m wondering if there was some camera shake going on. Love the angle and emotive aspect between the boy and the man working together!

Framing your subjects through the ladder was an interesting idea! I think the resolution the photo was uploaded at is the problem, and not that it’s blurry. An ISO of 100 and a shutter speed of 1/250 should not have produced a blurry image. I would consider doing a little bit of a closer crop. Maybe just a little off the top and no where else. We really need the side of the house in the image to make it clear that it’s only the ladder that isn’t level. Good job with the exposure in such a varied light situation and capturing a sweet moment (between father and son?).

The pixelated/blurry photo is very distracting, but I think it was the resolution it was saved or uploaded with, nothing wrong with the camera settings (because your watermark is blurry too, and this had nothing to do with the camera). I love the way you framed it. Overall it’s a neat picture and artistic. It is hard to critique though since we can’t really see the image too well.

Love the framing with the ladder, and the concentration on their faces. I think I would have gotten lower, shot through the next rung down, to get a better shot of their faces. Also maybe I would shift to the left a bit to place the edges of the ladder at the edges of the frame more. I like the lighting, the dappled shade on the man’s hat and back and the boy’s arm. You caught a nice moment here!

Very Creative! I love candid life shots that capture such great moments! I would personally like to see the image with the black increased and maybe a tad warmer. I LOVE the framing with the ladder! Such a great idea!

Much better ;) My other comments about the framing stay the same…. I love the way you framed it. I think I would have photoshoped the glare our that is on top of the ladder. It is a little distracting and my eye was drawn to it instead of the subjects at first. Other than that I really like this picture :)

Love it! Such a creative concept looking through the ladder. I might change the angle so that a little more of their faces were in the picture. (Although maybe that wasn’t possible with the house in the way.) I also love how you captured such a candid moment.

As the other comments stated, the ladder framing the subject fits perfectly with the theme. I would perhaps try cropping out the wall on the left-hand side, leaving just the ladder, to see what that looks like. Lovely photo that really captures a ‘father-son’ moment.

I love the framing idea too, would also suggest you try a closer crop though, as a viewer I have the urge to step closer to the scene which is wonderful. You can really see the concentration going on there and I would try to emphasize the focus on that more. It would probably help to get rid of the part of the house on the left side because there seem to be leading lines that don’t point at the center of the activity there… I’m not sure about this, jsut played around with ideas. What I truly love about the picture apart from the peaceful feel and the absolute concentration is the play of light and shadow that you captured, great work!

I like like the way the ladder frames the scene too. It is really creative the way that you used an element of the activity as a frame for the subjects to draw the viewer in. I would try a version of this photo in black and white. I’d also try cropping it a little so that the side of the house isn’t in the frame.

I really like the creativity of the shot and that it is candid. To me the lighting is very distracting. It is very harsh on their skin and very dark in the shadows. A more even lighting situation would have been more ideal, but I understand that the circumstances of the photo might not have allowed for better lighting. Good job capturing this moment!

I love the beautiful father son moment that is captured here. Move the camera more to the right which would have left out the house and some of the tree. I agree, I would like to step right into the picture and we can’t the way it is. Love shooting through the ladder–very artistic and creative. Gives me ideas!

I love the framing with the ladder, especially since it fits the theme of the image. It doesn’t feel blurry to me, just a low res file, no big deal. I would crop more so you lose the distraction of the house on the left. In an ideal world, there wouldn’t have been the dappled light. It is a great moment captured.

What a neat idea, to frame with the ladder. I also love how it is so candid. I would crop the house of of the image, but overall, great job with the creative shot.

Thanks to all who left critiques…the bit about cropping and the hot spot on the ladder are super helpful. Sometimes when you know your subjects your eye goes to them regardless of distractions…it’s helpful to have a fresh perspective :) I really appreciate it!

Such an awesome moment to capture! I love photos of father and son like this bc men can be so “tough”. I find that one area starting with the son’s arm is a bit dark. Looks as though the sun was almost pretty direct. That can be fixed in your editing program using fill light. But I would have tried to use something to reflect light in to that area of the photo. I love the framing! Very original and well thought! Great job!!!

wow what a moment. i love candids. i like the framing. i’m not sure what blurryness people are referring to. it feels like we are sneeking a peek and very intimite moment and i think it was supposed to be that way. The only thing i would like to see if maybe a little more light. Exposure maybe??? I still love the shot though.
