Very nice! I love how you choose to put it in B&W. And I also love how her eyes crisp and clear. I would have had her tilt her chin up just a tad and I would bump up the aperture just bit. The tree branches in the front are so blurry that you wonder what they are. Very nice photo!

  • May 26, 2014 at 10:42 AM

I love that the photo is black and white. Maybe next time try shooting from a lower angle so that you’re more on level with the subjects face. I love how her eyes really stand out and draw you in.

  • May 26, 2014 at 10:47 AM

What a beautiful picture!! I too love the B&W edit, it’s beautifully done, with the right amount of contrast, just nice. Even though her eyes really stand out thanks to her head’s position, I think a slight lest tilt forward would be better by diminishing the white portion of the eyes showing. Congrats on the focusing, you did an amazing job despite all those branches. Oh, and I love how they frame the face perfectly!

Wow…those are some crisp and clear eyes! Great job on the focus. At first glance I see her eyes, but the 2nd thing that draws me in is her hands. The one on the left (her right hand) looks almost ghostly to me. I might try cropping the photo just above her hand level so the viewer isn’t distracted and can focus on her beautiful face.

The B&W edit suits the subject well. I would have her look up just a bit, so she is looking head on. The lower portion of the face looks a bit distorted. The eyes are fantastic. I love the focus on them.

OH her expression is amazing! I love the short depth of field captured by the 1.4 aperture!
I would have suggested moving maybe 8 inches to “my” (the photographer’s) right so that one long branch didnt cut through the subject. I do actually like her hand posing, so I may have kept that in the cropping, but while shooting moved her hand so that the top knuckles could be seen.

And I have a question for you! How on EARTH did you acheive that exposure with the settings you used? when I use those settings before dark I get WHITE!

  • May 26, 2014 at 11:48 AM

Love love love!!!! Just a great shot! I love her looking up into the lense, very intriguing. The only thing that bothers me is how the edges of her face disappear into the scenery. Not completely but I would have adjusted the contrast slightly around her face, her eyes are PEFECT so I’d leave them alone…… All around great pic! Very mysterious! LOVE!

  • May 26, 2014 at 12:10 PM

I adore this picture! I am having a very hard time finding anything I would change. I love the shallow depth of field. I love the big eyes. I think the downward tilted chin enhances that. I love the black and white. The only thing I would even bother to change involves two tiny clicks. There are a couple white specks by her left hand that are a tiny bit distracting. All around great picture!

I love the tonal range in the black and white. I also think you have a great subject.. but as rule the whites on the bottom of the eyes should never be shown unless you are going for a spooky look. I think you are doing well

The first thing I noticed were here eyes! Very sharp and crisp. I love the black ad white edit it adds a softness to the mood. I also love the shoot though concept I think it can be very fun and creative. The only thing I might change is the twig to the left it’s a little distracting. Maybe trying to decrease appeture so the twig wasn’t as blurry, editing out, or changing the composition. But overall this is an amazing photo! Great job!

Truely beautiful photo!! I am drawn to the eyes and wouldn’t change anything about them. The only thing distracting is her hands which I would either crop out or try photoshopping them out totally. Great focus!

This is such an interesting photograph. It really makes you stop and look. The way the branches are blurred around her head look almost like an ethereal crown. I can’t imagine cropping out her hands; in my view they are needed! I agree that the white below the iris of the eye does make her look a bit creepy, but the fact that she’s kind of prowling through the branches enhances that emotion so maybe that’s what you were going for? I love the focus on the eyes. This is not a forgettable image, for sure!

very nice shot. I really like the sense of depth you created. hard for me to find any flaws in this but i might play with the composition a tad.
This shot is inspiring me to go out and shoot some portraits.

  • May 26, 2014 at 2:39 PM

Beautiful! What incredible eyes – they radiate personality, and so crisp! The only thing I have trouble with is the branches in the foreground. While they frame her face perfectly, they’re just enough out of focus to be distracting. I really love the softness of the whole image, especially offset by her beautiful eyes.

  • May 26, 2014 at 3:11 PM

I love the black and white and the balance of textures ranging from crisp to blurry. I would bring her chin up just a wee bit and tip the head ever so slightly to the right. I feel that chin down poses on younger girls adds an unintended element of sassiness. The composition and hand placement is otherwise perfect. Great photo.

  • May 26, 2014 at 4:34 PM

Really nice fresh image. The composition is lovely. If id have edited this I may have removed that little mole near her nostril, its kind of distracting to me. To be taken away from those eyes is a real shame.

  • May 26, 2014 at 5:37 PM

I love her expression of wonder, her eyes and the way she reaches toward you. I do like blurred branches in the foreground, They frame her without being too obvious. I would crop above her head just a bit. The trees are pointing directly up and out of the picture which draws the eye out of the frame.

  • May 26, 2014 at 7:54 PM

Love this picture! It’s perfect in BW. I would crop the top just a little bit…the brightness distracts just a little bit for me. You framed her face very well. Great photo overall!

I love the crispness of the eyes. I would try to adjust her positioning so the branches aren’t whiting out her hair as I think this confuses the image and distracts the viewer. I like the tilting forward of her face as it gives her a coquettish appearance.

    Wow – stunning photo!
This works SO well in black and white – the contrast is great! I really don’t see much at all I’d change… maybe the (what appear to be) snowflakes in her hair and to the right of her hand – they are so slight that either doing away with them altogether OR adding more so it is evident what they are – but that’s it. I love how clear and sharp the image is, and I really like the blurred foreground because it draws me in (as do those amazing eyes). Beautiful photo.

  • May 27, 2014 at 12:40 AM

I think it’s good, but I would increase the contrast. Also try to have more of her face be less obstructed in the shot.

  • May 27, 2014 at 11:06 AM

I have to disagree with the post about removing the mole since it is a permanent part of her face, not just a blemish. Think Cindy Crawford, she wouldn’t look the same without her trademark mole. The only thing that distracts my eye is the larger branch on the left side of photo. I’d be interested to see how it would look in color. Overall, I think it’s a well composed photo.

  • May 27, 2014 at 11:20 AM

What a gorgeous photo! I love the black and white, it was a great choice. If you could re-do it, I’d suggest removing some of the branches in the foreground–they’re a bit dense and distract from the texture of your subject’s hair. The thicker one on the middle-left of the frame is particularly distracting. I like how she’s interacting with the branches that are closer to her though, I think they frame her really nicely.

  • May 27, 2014 at 1:15 PM

I LOVE the black and white. And her eyes are just amazing. They really just pop out at you. I just think her hands look a little awkward. This is an amazing picture though! :)

I think black and white was a great choice for this photo! Personally I think the DOF of the foreground branches is a little distracting. Having a bit more of those in focus and perhaps maybe the whites of the eyes not be quite so white would be nice, but I also love how her eyes are so crisp that they pierce through to the viewer.

    May 27, 2014 at 4:51 PM

    Her eyes are super sharp!
Prune some of the branches as they take away from her hair/up-do.
I like the contrast of her outfit with the rest of the photo.

I love the B&W, the sharpness of her eyes, the focus on her eyes and how they just pop – I am brand new at this, so my, what I would change could be all wrong – her hands look a little out of focus, maybe she was moving the branches at the time so a higher Shutter Speed might bring them into focus a bit more. – Love the concept and am going to try shooting some B&W…..thank you. Now I am going to read what everyone else had to say and do some learning!

  • May 27, 2014 at 9:14 PM

I love the black and white as much as the others…and of course those eyes are mesmerizing but I think they maybe a bit too white in the edit…less is often more. I find the branches more of a distraction than an asset but since they are there, I like their ghostly appearance more than I would if the dof was greater. All in all, it’s a photo that gets your attention and that’s what it’s all about ( but let that stop you from doing the hokey pokey). Thank you for sharing

The subject’s eyes are pretty and captivating. I also like the b&w feel of this photograph. What I would have done differently is I would have stopped down to about f2.8-f3.2 to add more clarity to the hands and tree branches, this would also mean that I would have had to change the ISO as well as increase the shutter speed. This is just personal preference and doesn’t take away from the photographer’s own choice of vision at all. Nicely done!

I have always loved taking pictures, making memories. Now that I have kids I want to remember what they did, how they look, and what little personalities they have. I need to get into the habit of taking pictures everyday, need to really consider the P365!!

What I love about photography is the innocence, raw beauty and real life that happens all around us that we capture forever with our cameras. Those moments that we may never remember or capture otherwise. It can be so relaxing, fun and rewarding on so many levels.

I appreciate you sharing your knowledge of lens & bags. I need to upgrade my bags soon and love the versatility of the shutter bag!

  • May 28, 2014 at 6:48 PM

Very nice photo. I would have loved to see this in full color, but the black and white is a nice touch. I also would have had her relax her left hand. Looks a tad awkward in this shot. If her hands are holding the branch down, I would have cropped them out. I love how tack sharp her eyes are! This photo just needs a bit of lens flare from behind her head and it would be stunning. Keep up the good work!

Hi! I am fairly new to photography so just reading the other comments for me is always helpful! I have been able to learn so much from your website so thank you so much for what you are doing!!

I love this picture! I have a sister who looks close to this girls age and I am constantly looking for new ideas for pictures! Personally I would have moved a little to my right as the branch across her face is a little distracting. I love how the angle of her face makes her eyes be the first thing you see! They are gorgeous!

I LOVE the black and white conversion; I think I would have liked to have the subject off set instead of having her centered; LOVE how her eyes are the focal point…GORGEOUS eyes! (and the bokeh is beautiful!)

I love the B&W conversion. I feel like the blurriness of the branches in the foreground is a little distracting. I absolutely love the sharpness of her eyes, they really draw you in. Very beautiful picture!

I love how crisp her eyes are – they really pop out of the photo nicely. I think I would have stopped down my aperture a little more so that the branches in front are a little clearer and its more obvious what they are. I think the black and white conversion of this adds depth to the photo, her little smirk makes you wonder what she is thinking about!!! Nicely done

The first thing i noticed was here eyes, they are nice a clear. I love this picture in B & W. i reckon you could have made to apature to f/2.0 or something like that to binfg the branchs at the fount a bit less blurry. overall, i really, really like this picture! well done!!

    Very pretty picture, feels magical! I would have her tilt her head up a bit and maybe make it just a smidge less bright. Overall it’s beautiful though. Love the sweet smile she has!(;

  • June 10, 2014 at 12:02 PM

What a lovely shot, a great shot of the girls face and both eyes are nicely in focus! The only thing I would change is to lower down some so that the girl is looking straight out. The lighter area above her head is a little distracting to my eye, so I wonder if she was looking straight on if that area would be a tad darker? Otherwise, great capture and nice choice to convert to black and white.
