Many of you know the story behind my watermark and how I was blessed by a sweet gal, Erin, who made it for me. Thanks! However, since she can’t make them for everyone I thought I would share a few different tutorials on creating a watermark in Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and Lightroom. I realize some people may say it is easy to steal your photo even with a watermark on it and that may be true. But my theory is, every little thing I can do to discourage someone from stealing my photo, I want to do it. One of my friends once said she didn’t think she was “professional” enough for a watermark. I informed her that as long as her photos were on the internet that she may want to consider it. Personally, I don’t think it is a “professional” thing just more of a protection thing.

great advice and tutorial. i love my new logo and so happy to finally be using my name for my new photography business! :-D
Thank you! I can’t wait to make my own watermark!
It’s funny, I was just looking into this today. I saw an article that said watermarks are silly, easy to remove, even a sign of an amateur. (Ouch.) I thought about it and realized that I use watermarks to discourage theft, but also to “sign” my photos. So if someone does steal a photo and use it without removing the watermark, then people will know where the photo came from. Free advertisement, anyway.
Great tutorials! I realize that my photos can still be stolen with a watermark BUT I use my watermark as branding or to “sign” my photograph. After all a true artists always signs their work!
First off, you’re so nice to put up all this info!!! Second, I was just saying to my hubs, right as I was pulling up you site, that since it is spring it is time for me to start taking better pictures and (and he finished) Click it up a notch! ha, it was cute!
I’m so flattered!! Thanks!
I have been doing some watermarking but have been doing in bulk but with this I may use this instead. GLad I found your site…
Well I for one, am in favor of watermarking. I figure, if someone is going to steal my photo and claim it as their own work, I may as well make them work for it by removing my watermark. I like to sign my photos anyway, so regardless…I think it’s a great idea!
Courtney, I was so glad to find this post in your archives! However, I was wondering if you ever ended up doing the follow-up post with a tutorial for Lightroom 3 users? I would really love a tutorial on that!:)
I’m a NEW newbie, so this might be a silly ? but I plan on exporting each picture twice from Lightrrom- 1 for saving to print later & 1 for the web to save for our blog. Obviously, I do not want a watermark on pics to print but I do want a wtermark on web pics… Is there an easy way to do this?
Hey Heather! Maybe this post will help. This is how I export my images for both print and for web. I only watermark my images for web – http://clickitupanotch.com/2011/07/exporting-photos-from-lightroom/
Thank you! :)
