Editing

Which editing program should I get?

I often hear this question from photographers once they are ready to start editing their images. I always suggest Lightroom. I adore Lightroom and have been using it exclusively to edit my images for years. That is right, I edit 100% of my images in Lightroom.

    User friendly

It may just be me but when I opened up Photoshop Elements for the first time I was completely terrified and overwhelmed. Holy button overload Batman! Seriously, so many buttons and options and I had no idea what to do. However, when I opened up Lightroom I saw it had different modules. This made sense to me. I knew when I was in Library mode I couldn’t edit and this was for organizing. The Develop module was where I edited my images. Made sense. I spend 95% of my time in this module and don’t worry about Map, Book, Slideshow, Print and Web unless I have something very specific I want to use those modules for. This made Lightroom seem less overwhelming.Screen Shot 2015-06-16 at 1.33.36 PM

Edit a lot of pictures at one time

I’m lazy when it comes to editing. There I said it. Acceptance is the first step, right? Honestly, if I could skip editing I would in a heart beat. I love taking the photo and finding the light but uploading and editing, pass! If I take a ton of pictures of my kids in a certain room with the same type of light, I can edit one of the images, highlight the rest of them and then click “Sync” and now they are all edited the same. Huge time saver and for someone like me who doesn’t like to edit this is wonderful!

    Helps me stay organized

If you have read my tutorial on how I organize my photos then you know it is very important to me to have my images where I can find them. When in the Library module Lightroom has a variety of ways you can organize your images. You can use color coding, stars, or keywords. My favorite are the keywords. When I was putting together my kids photo books this year for Christmas I was able to put together 3 books in 4 hours using the keyword system in Lightroom. Simply decide on what keywords you want to use and then label the images correctly. You can then create a smart collection where Lightroom will find all the images that have that keyword and put them in a folder for you. Again, Lightroom helping me save time. Thank you!

You can find tons of Lightroom tutorials on my site and many others but if you don’t know where to start it can be confusing. I have something awesome to share with you.
