What a cutie! I like the lighting, lots of shadow and light mixed are good for BW. I think that it’s a bit too tight in the frame (I too love to fill the frame and have to watch for this) and I’m not sure the angle is the best for the DOF you have. Lovely catchlights and sweet expression.

I love the fact that this is in black and white! I don’t think much needs to be changes other than removing some of the shadows along her cheek and lip area. Otherwise I think it’s a beautiful shot.

I would’ve zoomed out a touch more so that if this were ever framed, you wouldn’t lose some of the most important elements of the photo.

I was drawn in by your close crop and intensity of her eyes. I would have liked the far eye to have been just a bit more in focus. Also, the hairclip competes for my attention. I like to be drawn to the eyes first in a portrait photo. I loved the black and white compostition.

Such a sweet little face!! I love her little lips, my son does that with his and it makes me melt with the cuteness! I love the catchlights that you captured in her eyes and the range of tones from dark shadows that blend into black to bright highlights. Compositionally I would have tried to give a little more space on the left side of her face so that it isn’t bumping up against the edge of the frame, but I love how close you feel to her while looking at the image. At the same time though I know that little ones move so very quickly that it can be hard to compose a shot in the moment! Looking at your camera settings, you definitely have room to play around and by bumping up your ISO you could have in turn bumped up your shutter speed which would allow more freedom for movement with little ones. I always try to stay at ss 250 or above when photographing children, it can be hard at times! That paired with stopping down your aperture a bit would allow for more crispness with more in focus. This is one of those pictures that will capture you for years because of the expression and the emotion you likely will feel when looking at it. Great shot!

Love the lighting. Perfect in B & W. I would have zoomed out just a tiny bit so that nothing was lost. But otherwise a wonderful shot.

I love this in B&W and her expression. I think that the depth of field is a little too shallow. If you stop it down her entire face would be in focus. Good job on the lighting and catch lights in her eyes.

I think this is an AMAZING pic with the cutest little girl. In my opinion I would have moved the focus point just a little bit more towards the right. I agree with Megan, adjust some of the shadow in the lip area. I also agree with with denise fb with a bit too tight in the frame on the right side – left side looks fine to me. Great job Anna!!

I love the b&w!! The focus on her eye is very nice. I wish I could get that kind of shadow and light mix on my photos.

  • September 1, 2014 at 10:23 AM

What an adorable photo! Love black and white, the only thing I think I would have done differently would be not to fill the frame so tight. I am working on that myself, I tend to fill the frame too tightly. Great job though!

  • September 1, 2014 at 10:23 AM

absolutely adore this angled profile and the catchlights! the expression captured is excellent.
i’d probably level (bringing back some light) on the dark tone so as the bottom lip and her right ear can be a little more visible. i don’t know if this was cropped in camera or during post, (cropped too tight imo) but bringing back some negative space on the right side of frame will be nice (by placing her right eye on the left rule of third, overall, i absolutely love this composition.

I love the black and white and expression- good job! I think you used shadows wonderfully :) Only 2 things I notice: 1. The one cheek is pretty blown out. If you took the image in RAW you can bring down the highlights to remove some of the damage. 2. Personally I think the composition would be stronger if you had more space in front of her eyes. It’s not a hard rule, but generally you want more space in the direction the person is looking. Here instead she’s gazing one direction and all the space is behind her face. I would have brought it out. Good job!

How adorable! I love b/w photos. Basically, I’m obsessed with them! I would have adjusted the focal point a tad, to the center of her eyes, to get both eyes in focus. Otherwise, it’s gorgeous! And so is she.

I love this portrait. The catchlights in here eyes are perfect and the contrast is wonderful for black and white. I would have given her some space to look into (in my opinion the crop may have been a little too tight on the right). One of my photography instructors always tells me to shoot with extra space- it helps me a lot when it comes to changing the crop. :)

  • September 1, 2014 at 10:37 AM

I love the shot-it’s beautiful and your model is quite the cutie! I would have pulled back a bit to have a bit more focus in the left eye. I really love the black and white-I don’t think you can ever go wrong in b/w!! Good work!

Wow! What a sweet picture! I love how you are playing with the light (or lack of it). The contrast between the shadows around her face and the catch lights in her eyes is so great. I think it could be improved by closing up the aperture just a little. With the shadows coming in from the left and the DOF blurring out the right, I feel like not enough of her face is visible. I also really love the messy curl above her eye. It acts almost like a line drawing attention to her eye. Very nice picture.

  • September 1, 2014 at 10:47 AM

I love the shot, she is a cutie and the eye, hair in focus makes it stunning! I would have loved to see more image past her left eye and cheek to balance out the shot. Your the lighting and how it falls on her face is beautiful!! Great job!

I love her expression in this image! I would’ve pulled out a little. May out at to the upward right to what she is glancing at, widened aperture to get the other eye in focus, and play with the shadowing around her little mouth. I love how much expression you get out of BW images.

  • September 1, 2014 at 11:16 AM

What a sweat image. I love the black and white. The shadows give it a dramatic feel. The only suggestion I would make is to decrease your appeture to maybe f2.8 it will still give you a shallow depth if field but her whole face would be in focus. Right now only her one eye is sharp and in focus. But that might have been the look you were going. I might have also not cropped it as tight. Maybe leave a little open space to her left. It’s just a little more settling to the eye when you give the subject space to look into. Overall a very cute photo and a good black and white edit. Good job!

OH MY GOODNESS!!! This is a photo I want to try to recreate :) I hope you take that as a compliment! I might have increased the aperature a little and compensated by bumping up the ISO also, to capture those beautiful eyes. I love the black and white and the way you really captured this precious little one. Thanks for inspiring me :)

I think the black and white is great for these shots where you want to capture the beauty of the expression. I might have increased the DOF to make sure both of her big beautiful eyes are in focus, unless of course the one in focus was the look you were going for! If you pulled back a bit to make sure she’s not tight in the frame it would be nice to see more of her adorable curly hair. Perhaps watch the shadows on her lower lip and make sure that the right cheek under her eye isn’t getting blown out. Great job successfully capturing a quick moving little one in a quiet contemplative look!

I love the lighting in the photo, especially as it catches in her eyes! I would have cropped a little looser and put less of the back of her head and more of her face in the frame. I also think b&w is the perfect choice for this photo!

  • September 1, 2014 at 3:27 PM

I love the black and white and dramatic lighting. I think a smaller aperature so the other eye was in focus would be good. Beautiful expression.

I think this is beautiful in black and white great focus on her eye really drawing you into her innocence. I would have liked a little less crop and just a little more light on her bottom lip but otherwise it’s really very nicely lit. Beautiful.

  • September 1, 2014 at 5:16 PM

I love that you chose to do this in BW and I love the dramatic effect of the close cropping. I would have use a little higher of an f/stop, as the back eye is a little too out of focus. I think this would have also brought that adorable little pout into focus better. All in all, I really love the lighting. Great job!

What a cute little girl! I love that it’s black & white. I too feel that it’s a little too tight, maybe a little more space to the right would have been better. I love the shadow from the left but I feel some light could have been bounced back onto her lower lip. Love the catchlights!

  • September 2, 2014 at 8:39 AM

Wow! I love this picture! There are only two things I’d do – reduce the shaddowing under her lips because you can’t see any detail there adnd expand the fram a bit so that her cheak isn’t getting cut off. Great photo and super cute little girl! I have a hard time with Black and white, but this photo is impressive! Love her little curls too!

I agree it’s a great B&W but definitely zoomed out some and maybe a bit more sharp. Other than that I love the low key lighting

I love the black and white! Maybe move to the right just a bit to get more of her other eye in focus. The catch lights in her eyes are beautiful, and she is a cutie!

I love the dramatic light. I would have bumped up the iso so that I could use a smaller fstop bringing that far eye into focus. I like the composition! All in all it’s a beautiful image of a sweet child, it really captures this babies innocence.

  • September 3, 2014 at 12:44 AM

I love the softness and the black and white conversion. I think I would have shifted her to the left just a touch. I don’t think you necessarily need to zoom out, but need more space on the right in the direction she is gazing. The catch lights are perfect. Beautiful image!

What a face! I would like to see a bit more detail in the photo, so a little more exposure. Especially since the subject is a sweet, innocent little girl, having more detail would soften and lighten up the image. But she’s really captured a great expression, which is a huge challenge with older babies/toddlers!

This is an adorable photo! I love the cute expression you captured – her eyes and formation of her mouth are so cute in this!!! I think I would like to see a little less shadow below her mouth, the contrast of black and white is beautiful but I think just a little less darkness under her mouth might help define her mouth/lips a little more. Also – if zooming out would have given you a little more darkness surrounding her that might have added to the contrast too! I love the catchlights you got in her eyes also – so cute!! Great shot – i love side light!!!

I absolutely adore this little girl, and the sweet innocence this photo captures! I love the way the light falls and shadows her face accentuating her precious features perfectly, and I think the contrast of the light and shadow alone was enough in this pic, and perhaps less of a vignetting would showcase her features better… I found myself looking for the light, and trying to figure out the source rather than focusing on the sweet simplicity of this little angel! Sometimes less is more, maybe?? I myself am a huge fan of a beautiful vignette, but I feel like in this shot where her face fills the frame it changes the color and shape of her face in the right third of the shot. I think its just a beautiful shot all in all, and I love your shallow depth of field, and how you managed to get those sweet little curls falling over her eyebrow. I love your use of dramatic light, and your daring to fill the frame… Just PRECIOUS!

  • September 12, 2014 at 7:38 PM

Love this picture. It captures innocence. I loved how you filled the frame. I dont think I wouldve done anything different.

    Oh simplest form of stunning!!!
I would bump up your ISO to allow more light just it give more depth between the highlights and shadows!!! all in all amazing shoot
