What a lovely photo – beautiful young lady! The background blur is perfect, and I love the light, airy feel of the picture. The one thing I might change would be to add a bit of contrast, to make the subject stand out a bit more – the light on her hair and the side of her face seems to wash her out just a bit. Really great photo; very natural.

I love her facial expression and the sense of emotion you feel with this image! I love images that bring that sense of wonder, as the viewer I am wondering what she is thinking about or what has caused her thoughtful gaze. I like the composition as well. On my screen it looks as if she has some blown highlights in her hair. I would try to bring those down of able and I agree with the other critique of adding a bit more contrast. Beautiful image regardless!

As Katrina said lovely photo. I was thinking how to change the composition to focus more on lovely young lady.
I would try cropping out some of left side, I tried covering with my hand and I think it improved the contrast of the photo at the same time keeping the natural look.

Good morning. Just did one similar to yours. Love this look. You did great capturing her expression. When you look at a photo you should see the subject first. Before anything else. Not so in your photo.I see the highlights behind her because they are brighter. Do you shoot in raw? Photoshop can correct this when you open a raw image. If you are not familiar with this there are some great tutorials on line. Good luck. Keep shooting.

Beautiful picture. I like how she stands out in the front. I think the light is to bright and it washes out part of her face and hair. I would have maybe had her wear a different colored sweater. There is nothing fancy about this picture but that is what makes it look even more beautiful. Looks like you captured a peaceful moment.

Love the blur of the background. The image seems a bit flat so I would try adding a bit more contrast to really separate the subject from the background. The composition works well for this image, especially with her thoughtful expression.

What a beautiful image and young lady! I would probably darken the background with some contrast. Love the airy feel of the image. The subject looks just right to me, maybe a bit of darkening on the edge of the forehead, other than that I would not change anything else on the subject, Well done!

I love the bokeh in the background. I love the sparkles in the image. I also would increase contrast, sharpen the image a little. I’d try to sharpen her eyes and brighten them up. I do like the use of negative space. Your subject looks comfortable. Almost like she is daydreaming. Good job.

At first glance, its very pensive, looking. I s drawn into the image. I’d try contrast too, then black and white. Or, maybe warm it up a bit? Thanks for posting, critiquing, always helps me!

I love the background blur in this photo. Something I have been trying to achieve in my photos and you’ve nailed it. The light behind her washes her out just a bit so maybe have her turn her face just a little more towards you. I also love the coloring in this photo. Gorgeous!

I love how the girl is looking off as in thought, the bright spots in the background are too glaring, making me want to squint, I would tone them down. I like the girl being focused and the background being fuzzy.

I like the use of the negative space. Your subject, like my favorite subject (my daughter) is very fair, and I feel she is often washed out in pictures. I would darken the exposure a bit and maybe up the saturation/vibrancy on her. Great bokeh!

I love the composition of the image and how your subject is looking towards the negative space! The highlights look to be blown out. I agree about bumping up the contrast to make her standout more. I would tone the down with highlight slider. I love how you narrowed your aperture to make sure your subject was fully in focus which still allows you to get that beautiful blurred background! Great job!

This is a great natural capture of the subject and her expression. However, I immediately find the blown out highlights on the horizon and at the top of her hair distracting. One commenter said that it immediately made her wanted to squint, and I think that’s a very accurate observation. Because of those blown out highlights, I also find the bright green (and maybe yellow, too, but I’m not quite sure) distracting in comparison with the muted tones of the rest of the photo. I’m guessing that you didn’t need to raise your ISO at all for this photo; certainly a lower ISO would have reduced the blown out highlights, and also perhaps a lower shutter speed. I do really like the blur of the background, though, and the bokeh on the soil. Both of those can be difficult to capture!

I had a good look at the photo before I read the other comments, just to see if I was right in my assumption. I’m not used to doing this and am trying to train my eye. I think firstly, the girl is really very good looking, and I think there is a very good bokeh. The first thing however that drew my eye into the picture was the strong light over the girl’s head. Perhaps if Chloe was lower down taking the shot if would eliminate the light, or used a little under exposure it would help. Hope my critique is alright…

What a beautiful natural photograph. I too love that her daydreaming fits in the negative space. What caught my first was the brightness above her head compared to the mellowness of the subject. It’s a beautiful photo and makes me wonder what she’s thinking.

I feel like you captured the teens innocent “wanderlust” beautifully. Only thing I would recommend is more contrast between background and subject.

  • October 13, 2014 at 1:16 PM

Lovely! I love the crop and composition. I love the softness and the bokeh and how she’s gazing off to the side. The only suggestion I would make is adjusting the white balance. The sun glow and the image in general have a green tint by increasing the green/magenta slider and adding more magenta I think it would give this image a warm glow. Good job!

I love the composition of this photo and her pose. Looks like you caught her in a deep moment of thought. I would have maybe cropped the photo on the left just a bit and boosted the contrast to bring more life into the photo. I also would’ve used a reflector while using the photo because her hair is backlit but there’s no light aimed at her face. Overall, I like the mood this photo is giving me. A nice, peaceful, pensive moment.

I love this photo, it is very beautiful. I too though would’ve added some more color to it somewhere whether you made the fall leaves stand out a bit more, or had her wear a different sweater. I also would’ve changed the composition a bit around the side of her face and hair, but over all this is a beautiful picture with a beautiful girl.

  • October 13, 2014 at 7:17 PM

I really enjoy this photo. I think the composition is very neat and I like the contemplative look on the subject’s face. I agree with others that it makes me wonder what she is thinking. It appears to me that the lighting around her head and face makes things look like there is no definite ending to the lines in her face, though. I am a big fan of backlighting, but I would attempt to ensure the subject isn’t too washed out. Really like the aperture you used, though. It makes for a very nice setting. Thanks for the photo!

  • October 13, 2014 at 10:45 PM

I love the look on the subject’s face, it looks like she’s enjoying being in nature. I love the use of bokeh however, my eye is first drawn to the top of her head is blown out a bit. I think I would have crouched down a bit more in an attempt to have the light filter over the subject instead of hitting her at the top of her head. It’s a beautiful setting and you used a great aperture. I love blurred out backgrounds so much!

I absolutely love the blurred background in this picture! I would try to get more of a defined line between the subject’s head and the sunlight that’s hitting her so they don’t blend in quite so much. I also really love the natural look this photo has between the background and her expression.

I like your use of depth of field to get the background soft and draw the eye to your subject. Likewise your use of back lighting is a good idea. I’d suggest aiming your camera a tad mor to the right to shift her to the left in the frame and create some space between her hair and the edge of the frame. Also, your backlighting would be more effective if the background were darker. Right now her hair is lost in the blanched region at the top of her heard. You want to be able to clearly distinguish what’s her from what’s not her. I might also out her in a red hued sweater. You’re off to a good start here. With a few minor adjustments you’ve got a sure winner.

I love that you off set the subject; it adds interest to the photograph. She is a little overexposed on the side of her face and top of her head. I love the softness of her expression and background. The bokeh is perfect!
