I love his expression and the eye contact! I *think* his eyes might be a little soft, but it is hard to tell on here. The hair on top of his head looks pretty well in focus, and at 2.8 it is likely that the focal plane was shallow enough that you did only get his hair and just barely missed his yes. (I know how tough that is with a moving subject!) Also, the square crop doesn’t do much for this image unless you are using it for a Christmas card. I would rather have a portrait crop so that I could see his hands and would add a little bit of dimension to the photo and make for a better composition. Great job on this. He is adorable!!

Beautiful, sparkly catchlights in the eyes! Lovely! And what a sweet subject. I agree with the portrait crop comment. I would love to see his hands too. And, if you are going to crop the top of his head, I would bring the crop down closer to the forehead so his eyes are on the upper third line of the photo, then my eye goes right to his beautiful eyes and doesn’t get delayed at his hair. Great job!

I love this shot! I love the angle and the flattering, upward gaze. The sparkle is magical! I wonder about lightening/brightening the shot and then bringing the vignette in to compensate…Just to give a little more detail and sharpening for the shot…But, I’m still learning! Again, the innocence and curiosity is captured totally in this shot! Great job!

Thanks ladies for your encouraging, honest critique. I def. struggle with sharp focus, so I will keep working.

    Jodi, you are too sweet!!!

What a great moment captured in this photograph! I love his expression of joy and a bit of wonderment. It feels like this photo tells a story that makes me want to know more. The right side of his face seems a little soft to me. I would suggest closing the aperture (higher number) down a bit to pull some more of his face and hair into focus. The black and white is perfect for this photo as it draws your attention right to his eyes and expression. Wonderful capture!

Amber, this is such a sweet capture of B! He’s adorable! You couldn’t ask for a better expression!!

Great use of side lighting! I’m impressed you were able to capture catchlights in both eyes since he was at a 90 degree angle from the window. Well done!! His face does look a little bright camera right. I looked at it LR and noticed that the reds are in the high 90s. You typically want to keep them at 90 or below so it doesn’t look blown out and loss of detail when printed. You can fix this by bringing down the brightness and/or burning that side of his face with an adjustment brush. This is something I have recently become aware of that I do often in images. I wish the top of his head wasn’t cut off but my guess is you were just standing above him and that might of been as wide as your lens would go. If you have time, next time try to hop on a chair so you can really show just how small he is. For this image, I would probably crop it a little tighter right above his elbows. Love the soft shadows on his face. A lovely conversion as well! I am glad you converted this to black and white because I think it is the perfect photo for a conversion. Thanks for sharing! Remember, these are just opinions and you want to make sure your vision shines through on your image :O)
